Highlights

  • It’s helpful to stay in your place as if you were a guest

  • Experiencing your space from a guest’s perspective lets you figure out if there’s anything you want to add or refine

  • After your stay, for example, you might decide to clean up an entryway or add a luggage rack in a bedroom

One way to check if your space is ready for guests is to spend the night there (or ask a friend to). Start from the very beginning as if you were arriving for the first time: Are your parking directions clear? Can you easily find your way to the entrance at night? Is there a place to put your luggage? Showering and sleeping in your space can help you double-check if the water pressure is okay and the bed is comfortable. Don’t forget to go through the checkout process—if there’s a key, do you know where to leave it? If any quirks come up along the way, it’s a good idea to take the time to refine your space or add clarity to your listing details, house manual, and check-in instructions.
