Located just south of the New Hampshire border, Salisbury is one of the oldest towns in Massachusetts. It started as a farming community, as evidenced by the many farms still in existence today — but it wasn’t until the 19th century, when the town developed access to five miles of coastline, that Salisbury turned into the seaside retreat that it is today.

The town is beloved for its classic summer vibes, with Saturday night fireworks displays and old-school arcade-style games, plus outdoor activities like hiking and beachfront camping at the Salisbury Beach State Reservation. What makes Salisbury unique, though, is its history. The town was once a part of the territory of the Pentucket tribe, later established by the English in 1638. In Salisbury Square, take a self-guided walking tour of the well-preserved 18th and 19th-century architecture and you’ll see the predominant styles of the time, including colonial at the East Parish Meetinghouse (1834) and Greek revival at the Town Hall (1895).

Salisbury is most popular during summer when many outdoor activities are available, but fall in New England can be just as inspiring. You can enjoy fairs and outdoor festivities like the annual Salisbury Fair in the Square, featuring local foods and artisan wares such as handmade wreaths and painted furniture. You can also go out for a hike and enjoy the region's many state parks and take a nature bath, walking amidst the foliage’s brilliant, changing colors.

Winter can be challenging with the freezing temperatures, but spring in Salisbury is a peaceful time when beach rentals are plentiful and the days start to warm. Temperatures are balmy enough for long beach walks, where you may catch sight of a few herons or shorebirds.

Historic farms

Stop in on one of the oldest family-run farms in America, Bartlett — which began operations in 1657 — and check out the 10th generation of Bartlett's full line of fruits, vegetables, and beef. Once you’re done, hop on over to the historic Pettengill Farm, open since 1792, offering up unusual and colorful annuals, perennials, shrubs, and roses for your gardens or vases.

Salisbury Beach

Salisbury Beach is one of Massachusetts’ most popular beaches, stretching 3.8-miles along the Atlantic Ocean and offering boardwalks over the sand. You can take in the stars at Salisbury Beach State Reservation, where a large campground is arranged to resemble a small town — complete with lettered streets.
