The coastal community of Langs Beach lies in New Zealand’s Northland, just under two hours from Auckland. Cocooned by rocky headlands, Langs Beach boasts glistening turquoise waters and gentle waves ideal for swimming and paddleboarding. Langs Beach is also close to the wineries and olive orchards of Mangawhai, as well as some great hiking trails like the Mangawhai Cliff Walk and Tanekaha Forest Track.

The summer months in Langs Beach (December through February) see long, warm days ideal for fishing, hiking, and mountain biking. On January 1, locals come to celebrate the area’s Scottish heritage with piping, dancing, and traditional sporting competitions in the Waipu Highland Games. Temperatures dip during the winter months from June to August yet remain comfortable enough to be outdoors. The autumn and spring months boast milder weather, with more rain. If you’re planning to visit during these seasons, it may be a good idea to pack rainproof layers.

Waipu Caves

A short jaunt across lush farmland leads to the Waipu Caves, where you can traverse passages that wind through shallow waters and see cave ceilings covered in stalactites and stalagmites. Three distinct sections comprise the caves; one of which features thousands of glow worms. Their mesmerizing bioluminescent glow illuminates the caves in a spectacular display.

Piroa Falls

Part of the Waipu Gorge Scenic Reserve, Piroa Falls cascades over moss-covered rocks before dropping 65 feet into the river below. At the end of the walking track is a popular swimming hole that offers a fantastic view of the waterfall. You can pack your bathing suit to enjoy a relaxing dip in the waters or lounge on large rocks cooled by the mist.

Ruakaka Beach

Ruakaka Beach’s warm waters, gentle waves, and long stretches of soft sands spanning eight miles inspire beach wandering, sunbathing, surfing, and kitesurfing. The windswept shoreline features sand bars that come and go with the ever-changing tide. The beach offers spectacular vistas of the Whangarei Heads, Chicken Islands, and Sail Rock.
